Can you believe it; 25 years ago today, MTV went on the air at midnight. It seems just yesterday, they played the first music video, which ironically was VIDEO KILLED THE RADIO STAR, by the Buggles. And who doesn’t remember watching Madonna dressed in virgin white, writhing around on the stage at the MTV awards, singing LIKE A VIRGIN. Priceless.
I loved MTV in the early years, when Music Television (MTV) really was music television and you got to see actual music videos, not reality tv shows featuring a bunch of kids sitting around whining about their relationships. That’s not music; that’s teen-age drama, and you can get that at any local mall. Somewhere along the line, MTV lost the whole reason the network was started, and now they just keep reinventing themselves each year, with more reality shows, so they never age.
Anyway, CNN ran an article today featuring an MTV timeline, highlighting important events throughout the years. Check it out at http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/Music/08/01/mtv.at.25.ap/index.html
It’s worth a trip down memory lane.
