The 58th Annual Emmy Awards Review

Written on Monday August 28, 2006

I’m sitting on my sofa, lap top on my lap, Grey Goose straight up beside me, ready to watch the Emmys. I’m actully flipping back and forth between E!, NBC, and TVGuide Channel Red Carpet arrivals to see what the celebs are wearing and who’s being paired with whom.

My reporting on tonight show is going to be simple; I’m going to throw out random thoughts as they come into my head…

TV Guide Channel is counting down (or up) to Joan Rivers 1000 interview. But Joan doesn’t seem to know how to count to 1000, because after each guest speaks to her, she asks them to hit the counter button on the countdown clock they have beside her, and before each celebrity exits the podium from interviewing with her, she says, “now lets see what number comes up next”. WHAT? Does she not know what number comes after 991, 992, 993 etc. Give me break!

And as for Melissa Rivers, who’s supposed to be the fashion maven..the dress she chose wasn’t her best moment. She looks like a throw back from Cleopatra.

Kathy Griffin is arriving with Major Todd who just got back from Iraq. No explanation on who he is or where she met him, just that it’s Major Todd back from Iraq. What…did he a “Win a Date with Kathy Griffin Contest” or something?

There’s Gretchen and Danny Bonaduce. Gretchen…that dress. It’s a purple, pink and emerald green plaid patchwork like thing. Not so good.

Kudos to Jane Kaczmarek for speaking the truth about what size Hollywood really is. Size 8 is nothing to be ashamed of…and she’s right. There are more women in Hollywood that are that size, they just don’t openly admit it. Check out her charitable website www.clothesoffourback.org.

There’s Helen Mirren - a class act all the way. Probably one of the only women in Hollywood left that has the nerve to age gracefully and leave the plastic surgery and botox behind. A true beauty!

Barry Manilow..full of botox. Not a wrinkle on his head or anywhere on his face, but he’s getting a set of new hips very soon. There’s something very wrong about that.

Warren Beatty and Annette Bening…always a handsome couple.

There’s Portia DeRossi, but no Ellen DeGeneres; trouble in paradise?

Okay…time for Conan’s opening act, and once again he delivers. Funny, funny stuff! The song and dance number he did about NBC being in 5th place, hysterical. A combination vaudeville and barber shop quartet number.

Megan Mullally gets the first Emmy of the night for a show that’s not even on the air anymore. Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series (Will and Grace). Please…that’s so lame. And que the music to wrap up the speech; we get it. Shouldn’t she be worrying about her new talk show that premiers in September, and not crying tears over a show that’s been off the air for months? Well, actually years if you count how many seaons ago Will and Grace stopped being funny.

Martin and Charlie Sheen..the dynamic duo.

Conan O’Brien has been funny throughout the entire telecast so far, and we’re about an hour in.

Time to refresh my cocktail…..

Cloris Leachman is another class act, and soooooo beautiful and young at 80 years old. Beautiful, funny, talented…you couldn’t ask to work with, or learn from, a better actress.

Looks like a salute to Dick Clark is coming up, along with a salute to Aaron Spelling. Watching Tori and Candi trying to get through this ought to be priceless!

I’m welling up over Dick Clark’s appearance and speech. What a true icon, gentleman and inspiration to so many people, in so many generations. Barry Manilow’s song and dance tribute to American Bandstand put Dick in tears.

And Barry Manilow just won an Emmy for Best Musical Performance in a Variety Show…or something close to that.

Wow…judging by Megan’s performance of having to think on her feet, I’m having my doubts about her talk show, now more than ever.

Candice Bergen is a lovely woman and very talented actress; however, whoever put her in that white shirt and green skirt and tucked the shirt into a silver metal western belt, should be fired. NOT a good look for her at all!

Aaron Spelling…The Love Boat, Fantasy Island, Dynasty, Hart to Hart, Charles Angeles, S.W.A.T., Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place, 7th Heaven, Charmed, ….and so many more TV hits I can’t begin to name them all, and now the original Charles Angels (Farrah Fawcett, Jaclyn Smith, Kate Jackson) take the stage to give their tearful tribute to him… a fitting end to a very sucessful television legend.

The hours late, and I’m growing weary. I’m going to sign off now and enjoy the rest of the show.

That’s all from Hollywood tonight.
