Cupcake and Co - Burbank - A Review

Written on Tuesday June 17, 2008

You know I’m always on the hunt for new food items, and I came across a new cupcake boutique last weekend called Cupcakes and Co.

Located at 130 East Magnolia Blvd., Burbank, CA 91502 (818-843-2340), parking is no easy task. There are only 3 spots in front of the establishment; otherwise, you’ll need to park in the parking structure a litte distance from the shop.

A bit of a problem, but not enough to pass it by.

Once inside the shop, I’m reminded of Sprinkles in Beverly Hills; meaning, the cake case it the same, as is the wooden cake holders. The cupcakes are given to you in a lovely blue cardboard box (big points for cardboard, and not plastic take out), and they get extra points for having cupcake holders built into the box, so your cakes aren’t sliding all over the place.

I tempted myself with 6 cupcakes: red velvet w/cream cheese frosting; banana w/butterfinger chunks in the frosting; chocolate on chocolate; carrot cake w/cream cheese frosting; vanilla on vanilla; and coconut cake with coconut sprinkles on top.

At first bite, the cakes on all of them are excellent; light, fluffy, very flavorful unlike some cupcake shops that have their cakes taste of flour, and are heavy and dense.

The carrot cake was very moist and so flavorful, and the frosting just the right amount of cream cheese.

However, I have to say that the frosting on all of them is not my favorite; it’s very sweet. Each frosting certainly has it’s own flavor, but the over the top sweet factor, combined with the extra butter in the frosting, leaves a slight film on the top of your mouth, or at least it did mine.

The red velvet was a stand out, as it didn’t just take like chocolate cake, as so many do. And the vanilla was pure heaven; light, fluffy and full of vanilla flavor - not artifical vanilla — real vanilla; perhaps tahitian.

The coconut on coconut is a must try too.

Cost is $3.25 per cup cake, and they do take special order cupcakes and cakes.

If you’re in the area, it’s definitely worth a stop.
